Which insurance do I need?
A short check shows which property and liability policies may be relevant to your situation – no registration and no sales pitch.
On this page
The check only prioritises the property and liability risks covered on this portal. Health, long-term care, occupational disability and complex cover for surviving dependants need to be looked at separately.
How to read the result
The check does not sort by premium but by the question of what a claim would cost you in the worst case. Each assessment therefore carries one of four levels. The levels are deliberately broad. They do not replace personal advice; they only give general guidance on the order in which the policies may be relevant.
- Compulsory: required by law, you cannot do without cover
- Priority: the damage could ruin you financially
- Check: the value and your own savings decide
- Advice: too individual for an automatic assessment
The rules the check uses to weight results
We disclose the logic so that you can follow the result and challenge it. The check evaluates six details and follows fixed rules — there is no score and no weighting by commission. Personal liability insurance (Privathaftpflicht) always appears, regardless of your details. It is not compulsory, but it covers the one case that can tie up your finances for decades: personal injury that you cause. All other assessments each depend on a single detail.
- Own motor vehicle → motor third-party liability (Kfz-Haftpflicht) as Compulsory
- Own property → buildings insurance (Wohngebäude) as Priority
- Dog or horse → pet owner liability insurance (Tierhalterhaftpflicht) as Priority
- Household contents hard to replace → household contents insurance (Hausrat) as Check
- People financially dependent on you → cover for surviving dependants as Advice
Why large animals need their own policy
For dogs and horses, Germany applies stricter animal keeper’s liability under § 833 BGB (German Civil Code): as a rule, the keeper is liable even if they are not at fault. This is precisely why personal liability policies regularly exclude these animals, whereas cats and small pets are usually included. Some federal states require dog liability insurance for all dogs, for example Lower Saxony, Hamburg, Berlin, Schleswig-Holstein, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia. Other states only require it for certain dogs, for example by breed, size or weight. What applies to you depends on state law. Check this for your federal state before relying on a general assessment.
What the check deliberately does not assess
The check covers the property and liability risks that this portal also deals with editorially. Anything that depends on health questions, income or complex family circumstances is left out — not out of carelessness, but because six yes-or-no answers are not a sound basis for it. This affects two of the most important areas of all: protecting your ability to work and health insurance. If you have a gap there, you should close it before any property cover. An automatic assessment would not be responsible here.
- Health and long-term care insurance
- Occupational disability and ability to work
- Term life insurance and cover for surviving dependants
- Retirement provision and investments
Your entries never leave your browser
The check runs entirely locally. There is no sign-up, no saving and no transfer of your details to us or to third parties. If you reload the page, the selection returns to its starting state. One exception is the quick check on the home page: it passes your three answers to this page as a short code in the address bar, so you do not have to click twice. This code also stays in your browser.
Frequently asked questions
Which insurance policies are really necessary?
Priority generally goes to insurance required by law and insurance that covers damage that could ruin you financially – for many households, for example, personal liability insurance (Privathaftpflicht), health insurance, motor third-party liability (Kfz-Haftpflicht) depending on your situation, and cover for your ability to work. Cover for larger assets such as household contents or a building comes next. Small damage you can easily absorb can often be paid for from savings.
What does the Schutz-Guenstiger needs check do?
Based on a few details about your situation, the check works out which of the property and liability insurance policies covered here may be relevant to you. Your entries are processed in your browser and are not stored permanently. The result is guidance and does not replace individual insurance advice.
How often should I review my insurance needs?
A review makes sense whenever your life situation changes: moving house, moving in together, starting a family, buying property, changing vehicle or getting a pet. Apart from that, a look every one to two years helps you spot duplicate cover and gaps.
